IKEA

new IKEA megastore - three thumbs down. car park is a nightmare even where-ever they haven't got trucks pulling out cars that got bogged, service poor, you have to get your stuff yourself at the warehouse level, which is where Des discovered after 90 minutes or trying to find parking and being rammed in the ankles by 7-yrolds with miniature trolleys , that all the shelving is out of stock for at least a month.

she's buying painkillers for her head. we need it.

Another human engineering failure eh? Are Australians incapable of it? Spoiled by the illusion of space?

And they built it on a perfectly good wetland that had Spotted Harriers. *sniff*
Not that I blame Ikea, really I think the council was more responsible.

And not much of it.

Yes it was classed as degraded wetland.

But that entire car park and shopping area was mostly a big sea of lush Typha and some trees. The harriers and frogs didn't care, it was still habitat.

There's some speculation that what's been considered introduced Typha was already here at settlement, as well as the indigenous Typha.

Naw, Stirling station and the freeway beat them to it. Know that hump on the southbound side of the Mitchell? Nice subsiding sands under there that forces the council to resurface the road every coupla years.

Heh, and wasn't it meant to stop the subsidence? Crazy.

Wooh, Ikea, Yeah!

The original store had parking problems too - it's why I've only ever been to Ikea once.

over half of it is soft, deep sand

So either they've finished building the official carparks and they're less than half the required size, forcing one onto sand until that land is built on, OR (and I have fingers crossed for this option) they've just not finished paving all the parking areas in time for the opening.

Oh lord, it's IKEA. Maybe they're rewarding 4WD owners with exclusive parking rights.

The Council, as one of the few sensible things they've done offered to let people park over with them and said they'd provide a shuttle bus to Ikea to assist with the traffic problems they thought would happen.

Ikea said, nuh, traffic is a council problem, you can sort it out.

Certainly lost my respect.

The warehouse level serve yourself is standard in melbourne and sydney now. That being said i think they have more staff to make sure you don't ave to look for infinit hour for things they are out of.

I thought the parking and traffic would be a nightmare.

My thoughts exactly.
My sister seems to think its easier, but she went there all the time and worked in a furniture store. For casual shoppers i'd imagine it being a great big turn of.
