MLP:FiM S3 E-something... - Just for Sidekicks
He's back to being an competent if easily-distracted cook, for example. Corey Powell has done it again - taken a classic comedy set-up and turned it into a constellation of gags. And the sheer number of characters! Spike! The Mane Six! The CMC! Zecora! Granny Smith! Cheerilee X Macintosh! Screwloose, out of mental hospital and back in her home! And, of course, the pets, some of whom we haven't seen since the episode they first appeared in. Although I was a bit sad to see they put PeeWee the Phoenix on a bus. True, reuniting him with his parents was the right thing to do, and no doubt it improved the Library's fire insurance premiums, but it seems a bit damaging to the end of the Dragonquest episode to write him out again, offscreen.
And Powell and the animators managed to give all the characters character moments, establish relationships, demonstrate personality, and still all be as funny as hell. I am VERY impressed.
Apparently the events in this episode are concurrent with next weeks - it's a little odd and indeed hurtful that Spike didn't get an invite to the Crystal Empire - he did save the damn place in the season opener - but at least he got a very good episode out of it in exchange.
